Eighteenth-century British painters used the word conversation to describe informal group portraits as well as imaginary views of daily life, now called genre scenes. This commemorative exhibition celebrates eight years of SkyArts most successful tv series Portrait Artist of the Year. At the end of each heat the judges will choose one artist to go through to the next round of the competition. At these heats, participants will be challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters. The prize commission will also become part of the gallery’s permanent art collection. Frank Skinner and Joan Bakewell take the competition to Dublin where 21 artists hope to wow the judges with portraits of Pauline McLynn, David Rawle and Leth. The series finalists will see their work exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery for a month and the winner will be awarded a £10,000 major commission for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The competition will be filmed over the summer and broadcast on Sky Arts in October. “I jumped at the chance to host the series again.” “I had such a fantastic time last year learning all about painting and watching some really talented artist progress through the competition,” says Frank Skinner.
